Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Political education is crucial for fostering electoral accountability, as it equips citizens with the knowledge and skills necessary to participate effectively in the democratic process. In Gombe Local Government, political education has played a significant role in shaping voter attitudes and expectations regarding electoral accountability. As citizens become more informed about their political rights and responsibilities, they are more likely to demand accountability from elected officials. This study explores how political education influences electoral accountability in Gombe, examining the effectiveness of educational programs and their impact on voter behavior, candidate selection, and the responsiveness of elected officials (Garba & Usman, 2023).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the critical importance of political education in promoting electoral accountability, many citizens in Gombe Local Government remain disengaged or uninformed about their political rights and responsibilities. This lack of political awareness may contribute to low levels of electoral accountability, where voters fail to hold politicians accountable for their promises or actions. This study seeks to examine the role of political education in shaping electoral accountability in Gombe and identify strategies to enhance its effectiveness in promoting active citizen engagement and political transparency (Suleiman & Bala, 2023).
